Jeje Lalpekhlua (born 7 January 1991) is an Indian professional footballer who is a player for Chennaiyin and also plays for the Indian national football team.
 
 
He is the second highest Indian goalscorer in the Indian Super League since its inception. In 2015, he won the I-league with Mohun Bagan and the Indian Super League with Chennaiyin, and was subsequently named the FPAI Football Player of the Year.
 

Youth career

  • Born in the small village of Hnahthial in Mizoram, Jeje was born into a football-fanatic family. His father and elder brother played for a local Mizoram club—The Model Sporting Club—while his uncle represented Mizoram in the Santosh Trophy. Jeje made his debut for the Model Sporting Club four months after his dad had retired from the club.
 
  • Despite the initial hesitation from his parents in pursuing football professionally, Jeje came to light after a spectacular performance at the Wai Wai Cup held in Mizoram. On account of his strong performance, Jeje made it to the Mizoram U-19 team and never looked back. Jeje impressed youth coach Colm Toal at the U-19 selection camp in Gwalior and got selected for the U19 qualifiers.

  • Jeje was spotted by the Goa scouts and he signed for the Red Lizards at the age of 16. He then went on to captain the India U19 team in the South Asian Games.
 
  • Initially playing in their youth setup, Jeje would make his senior debut for Pune, who were then in the I-League 2nd division, during the 2009 I-League 2nd Division. It is only known that he played nineteen games and scored five goals in his first two seasons at Pune.

  • Lalpekhlua joined I-League newcomers Indian Arrows on a one-year loan from parent club Pune for the 2010-11 season.The Indian Arrows were only made up of Indian under-19 players. During the 2010 Federation Cup, he scored 1 goal for the Indian Arrows in the two games he played in.
 
  • On December 3, 2010, Lalpekhlua took part in Indian Arrows' first I-League game ever against Chirag United. The final score was 2–1 in Chirag United's favour. [
 
 
  • On December 8, 2010, Jeje scored his first ever goal for Indian Arrows against ONGC FC. After that, Lalpekhlua went on a huge scoring run and earned a lot of praise from many top AIFF personnel. On March 13, 2011, Lalpekhlua scored four goals against Air India in an I-League match which ended 5–2 in favour of the Indian ArrowsHe was then also declared man of the match in his club's 4–0 win over HAL on 3 April 2011.

Back to Pune

  • On July 7, 2011, it was announced that Jeje was to return to his parent club, Pune, in the I-League. Jeje made his first start (and his first overall game) for Pune since his return from Indian Arrows on September 17, 2011, during the Federation Cup group stage match against Dempo. During the match, Jeje scored his first goal in over a year for Pune, en route to a 2–1 victory.
 
  • [1.] Jeje then scored his second goal in the Federation Cup on September 19, 2011 against East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium. On September 26, 2011, he won the FPAI Best Young Player Award for the 2010–11 season, beating out players like Raju Gaikwad and Lenny Rodrigues. After winning the FPAI Best Young Player Award, Jeje started the 2011–12 I-League season as a regular starter for Pune.
 
  • In the second game of the season, he scored his first goal in the 78th minute to mark the start of a comeback to make the score 1–2 against Sporting Goa in a match which ended 2–2 on October 28, 2011. Jeje continued his scoring form in the next match as he scored against Chirag United in what was Pune's first win of the 2011–12 I-League season in a 3–1 win on November 1, 2011.] He then scored another goal in the I-League against Dempo in the 26th minute on November 19, 2011. Despite the goal, Pune still lost the match 3–1.

Dempo

 
  • On June 15, 2013, Jeje signed for Dempo on a two-year contract. Lalpekhlua made his debut for the Goan side in the I-League on September 22nd, 2013 against Shillong Lajong at the Duler Stadium, in which he came on as a substitute for Mandar Rao Desai in the 55th minute, as Dempo lost the match 0–3.] He scored his second goal of the season on October 9th against Salgaocar at the Duler Stadium in the 81st minute; the game eventually finished 1–1.

Mohun Bagan

 
 
  • On May 28, 2014, it was announced that Lalpekhlua would sign a one-year deal with Mohun Bagan. On August 11, Lalpekhlua made his debut for Bagan in a match against Tollygunge Agragami in the Calcutta Football League. In the 41st minute of the same match, Lalpekhlua earned and converted a penalty in what proved to be the only goal in a 1–0 win. On April 25, 2015, Lalpekhlua scored his first league goal for Mohun Bagan in a 2–0 win at Pune. [

  • In September 2014, Jeje was loaned out to Chennaiyin for the 2014 Indian Super League season by Mohun Bagan.
