Sakshi Malik (born September 3, 1992) is an Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.
She is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program, along with fellow female wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.
Malik had previously won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha
She has been coached by many coaches, such as Ishwar Dahiya, Kuldeep Malik, Kripa Shankar, and Manjeet. Her parents are Sukhbir, who is a bus conductor with DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation), and Sudesh Malik, who is a Supervisor at a local health clinic. Sakshi’s interest in wrestling was developed by watching his grandfather do wrestling in Akhada.
She started learning wrestling at the age of 12, at an Akhara in Rohtak under coach Ishwar Dahiya. Sakshi was previously employed by Indian Railways as a senior clerk, but after winning a bronze medal in the Summer Olympics, she was promoted to the rank of Gazetted Officer.
She has also completed her studies with her sports. She did her master’s degree in Physical Education in Rohtak from Maharshi Dayanand and was appointed as the university’s wrestling director in September, 2016. After her win, she was married to Satyawart Kadian in 2016.
Her husband is also an international level wrestler and has made India proud by winning medals for the country. Sakshi started her wrestling career by participating in the international arena in 2010 at the Junior World Championships, where she won a bronze medal.
In 2014, she won the gold medal in the 60 kg category. Following that, she competed in the Commonwealth Championships in 2013 and won a bronze medal in 63 kg, and she never looked back, winning a bronze medal and a silver medal in the New Delhi event in the 60 kg category. In 2014,
Sakshi competed in the Commonwealth Games and won a silver medal, and in 2016, she won a bronze medal in the Olympic Games held in Rio De Janeiro in the 58 kg category.She has won many accolades, such as in 2016 she won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, and in 2017, Sakshi won the Padma Shri and many more.
